DealMaker Town Histories – Versailles, Missouri brings together local history from the nineteenth century through the modern era. The publication looks beyond a simple timeline and explores how transportation, government, newspapers, manufacturing, local institutions and individual residents contributed to the growth of Versailles.
Versailles developed around its role as the Morgan County seat, and the Morgan County Courthouse and downtown Versailles town square remain central parts of the community's identity. The publication explores the courthouse, historic downtown Versailles, nineteenth-century Morgan County maps, the Martin Hotel, and other landmarks connected to the town's early development.
Transportation played an important role in the history of Versailles. Railroad service connected the community to markets and travelers outside Morgan County. The publication examines the Missouri Pacific Railroad, the Rock Island Railroad in Versailles, the Versailles railroad depot, passenger and freight service, and the arrival of the Rock Island line in the early twentieth century. The railroad era helped bring workers, commerce and new industries into the community. Today, the former railroad corridor is associated with the Rock Island Trail, giving the historic transportation route a new role in recreation and tourism.
