The Beginning, From Bad Axe to Viroqua
The area was home to Ho-Chunk people. Settlement was tied to the Bad Axe River, which gave the early community its first name. In 1848, settlers established the community on the Bad Axe River. During the 1850s, the county seat was relocated to Viroqua.
In 1851, Viroqua was established as the county seat of Vernon County and took its name from Viroqua, daughter of Ho-Chunk chief Winneshiek. Then, in 1865, a devastating tornado changed downtown. Viroqua rebuilt from the ground up, becoming a resilient and lasting community.
